| Designed particularly for three types of user: * the interested general reader who wishes to learn the basics of Old English (abbreviated to OE throughout this book) at his own pace and who has to work without a tutor; * the more serious student of the language who has tried the commonly available grammars and guides, but who would feel more comfortable starting with a book which gives a general background in the subject, without too much jargon; * the student of English language and literature who would like to get a feel for the earliest stages of the language without getting involved in a lot of technical detail.
