In Italy there are three public and one private certifications:

UNIVERSITY OF SIENA - CILS EXAM
The University for Foreigners in Siena releases the CILS - Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language.
The CILS is a diploma certifying the degree of linguistic and communicative competence in Italian as L2.
The CILS is recognized as an official language Certificate according to the Italian law dated 17 February 1992, n. 204 and paragraph 3 of Article. 10 of the Statute of the University. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the basis of a Framework Convention, recognizes the Italian Cultural Institutes abroad as official offices of the CILS exams. CILS has six levels, designed and constructed in conjunction with the information contained in the Common European Framework of Reference of the Council of Europe.

The CILS is designed and implemented within the CILS Center, a Center for Research and Services has an autonomous nature within the University for Foreigners of Siena, and is independent of the centers that provide training services linguistic.

UNIVERSITY OF PERUGIA - CELI

The Ministry of Education, University and Scientific Research has recognized the CELI 3 as valid in order to certify the knowledge of the language needed to enroll at university in Italy.
The University for Foreigners in Perugia is recognized as a Certification Body by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Several Italian Cultural Institutes around the world are in agreement with the University for Foreigners in Perugia as examination centers for certification.
A certificate CELI may serve for personal reasons, study or work.
CELI certificates are divided into five progressive levels and cover skills of a different basic, intermediate and advanced.
The examinations CELI in increasing order of difficulty, and with reference to the levels of the Common European Framework of the Council of Europe are:
CELI - IMPACT (Italian language certificate - level introductory) A1
CELI 1 (Italian language certificate - level 1) A2
CELI 2 (Italian language certificate - level 2) B1
CELI 3 (Italian language certificate - level 3) B2
CELI 4 (Certificate of English - level 4) C1

SOCIETA' DANTE ALIGHIERI - PLIDA
The main activities of PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) is the certification of competence in Italian as L2.
Certificate PLIDA is a diploma awarded by the Dante Alighieri Society under an agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is evidence of competence in Italian as a foreign language on a scale of six levels. The six levels of PLIDA ranging from A1 to C2 in various difficulty levels, and correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference of the Council of Europe (QCE):

PLIDA A1 = A1 QCE ( Livello di contatto / contact level )
PLIDA A2 = A2 QCE ( Livello di sopravvivenza / survival level )
Italiano fondamentale
PLIDA B1 = B1 QCE ( Livello soglia / threshold level )
PLIDA B2 = B2 QCE ( Livello progresso / progress level )
Italiano professionale
PLIDA C1 = C1 QCE ( Livello dell’efficacia)
PLIDA C2 = C2 QCE ( Livello della padronanza ( mastery level )

Certification of competence in English PLIDA is officially recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Italian Republic under the Convention 1903, 4.11.1993. PLIDA also operates under an agreement with the University "La Sapienza" of Rome (29.6.2004).The PLIDA is also recognized by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies (Decrete 18.10.2002) and the Ministry of University and Research as the title for a university registration terms of foreign students (prot. No 1906 of 9.10.2006).

AIL - ACCADEMIA ITALIANA DI LINGUA FIRENZE
The Accademia Italiana di Lingua (AIL) is the professional association of schools, institutions and experts in the field of teaching Italian as a foreign language.
The association's main office is located in Florence, Italy. The AIL initiated the first diploma of modern Italian which effectively tests the language abilities of the candidates.
Since 2007 the AIL DILC - B1 Examination has been recognized by the UFFT (Swiss Federal Office for
professional education and technology) as final Exam of Italian as second national language for all the professional commercial schools of Helvetica Confederation.
AIL offers the following exams:
DELI-A2
The Diploma of the Italian Language "Firenze" AIL, basic level, offered four times a year.
Suggested preparation time: 100-120 hours;
DILI-B1
The Diploma of the Italian Language "Firenze" AIL, intermediate level, offered four times a year.
Suggested preparation time: 240-300 hours;
DILC-B1
The Business Diploma of the Italian Language "Firenze" AIL, intermediate level, offered four times a year. Suggested preparation time: 280-340 hours;
DILI-B2
The Diploma of the Italian Language "Firenze" AIL, intermediate level II; offered four times a year.
Suggested preparation time: ca. 320 - 400 ore;
DALI-C1
The Diploma of the Italian Language "Firenze" AIL, advanced level, offered four times a year.
Suggested preparation time: 450-500 hours;
DALC-C1
The Business Diploma of the Italian Language "Firenze" AIL, advanced level, offered four times a year. Suggested preparation time: 500-550 hours, including 80 hours of business Italian;
Diploma examinations "Firenze" in written and spoken Italian for the various ability levels are held two or four times a year in exam centers worldwide. The exams are one of a kind and the correction of the written portions as well as the final evaluation are carried our in the main Florence office in order to guarantee a uniform evaluation
