| Financial Aid Granting Institutions - 6 | FANNIE AND JOHN HERTZ FOUNDATION It is a private foundation which provides fellowships tenable at three dozen of the nation's finest universities for graduate work leading to award of the Ph.D. degree in applications of the physical sciences. Each year the Foundation conducts a national competition for new Hertz Fellows. Of those who apply, only about one quarter will be interviewed. Of those who are interviewed, approximately one in ten will be awarded a Hertz Fellowship. For more information click here
HOWARD HUGHES MEDICAL INSTITUTE The largest privately funded education initiative of its kind in the United States, HHMI's grants program is enhancing science education for students at all levels, from the earliest grades through advanced training. Since 1988 HHMI has awarded approximately $1.5 billion in grants. Grants awarded by HHMI fit within two general categories: research grants for individuals and science education grants for institutions. Most HHMI grants are awarded through competitions that have specific objectives and eligibility criteria; thus, HHMI does not encourage and rarely funds unsolicited grant proposals. HUMAN FRONTIER SCIENCE PROGRAM ORGANIZATION (HFSPO) The HFSP supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms; topics range from molecular and cellular approaches to systems and cognitive neuroscience. A clear emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences. Research Grants are awarded for novel collaborations involving extensive collaboration among teams of scientists working in different countries and in different disciplines. Two types of grants are available: Young Investigator Grants and Program Grants.
Postdoctoral Fellowships are available for scientists who wish to work in foreign laboratories, with emphasis on individuals early in their careers who wish to obtain training in a different field of research. Fellows who return to their home countries are eligible to apply for a Career Development Award. Cross-Disciplinary Fellowships: Cross-disciplinary fellowships are intended for postdoctoral fellows with a Ph.D. degree in the physical sciences, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and computer sciences who wish to receive training in biology. INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION The Institute of International Education is a world leader in the international exchange of people and ideas. INTERNATIONAL UNION AGAINST CANCER UICC fellowships and training opportunities aim at facilitating the transfer of knowledge, skills and expertise to where they are needed. They offer continued professional development to a comprehensive range of health professionals, from epimiologists, public health and tobacco control educators, and behavioural scientists to investigators, clinicians, general practicioners, laboratory technicians, nurses and cancer society staff and volunteers. W.K. KELLOGG FOUNDATION The Foundation considers requests that fall within established or developing programming areas, as listed below. Most grants are awarded in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, and seven southern Africa countries including Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe. To be eligible for a grant, the organization or institution, as well as the purpose of the proposed project, must qualify under regulations of the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501c3 organization.
