Beginner Writing Course Presented by the University of Victoria, the Beginner Writing course is for students who have approximately 250-level TOEFL English ability. This course will help students to write well structured sentences and longer writing passages in a variety of practical, everyday styles. Students will learn vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure and basic paragraph structure. They will be introduced to the writing process, learn how to edit and revise their writing, and practice a variety of sentence structures. The course provides approximately 80 hours of study and practice in writing, over a period of 13 weeks. Intermediate Writing Course Presented by the University of Victoria, the Intermediate Writing course is for students who have approximately 400-level TOEFL English ability. This course will help students to write different kinds of clear, well-organized paragraphs. Students will learn how to write an outline and will be introduced to a standard English essay. They will study the writing process, learn how to edit and revise their writing, and practice complex sentence structures. The course provides approximately 80 hours of study and practice in writing, over a period of 13 weeks. Advanced Writing Course Presented by the University of Victoria, the Advanced Writing course is for students who have approximately 500-level TOEFL English ability. This course will help students develop a greater understanding of the writing process and master the basic components of multi-paragraph compositions. At this level, the students will learn to gather, select, and organize information to produce effective, coherent, and complex texts in the form of essays of at least 500 to 750 words. The compositions will focus on concrete, abstract, and theoretical topics that include complex structures. The course provides approximately 80 hours of study and practice writing, over a period of 13 weeks. Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language Communicatively Presented by the University of Saskatchewan, this certificate is made up of the two online courses described below. Courses can be taken during the same term or in different terms. Courses commence 3 times annually, in September, in January, and in May. Each course is 13 weeks in length. Students can expect to spend about 10-15 hours weekly on their studies in each course. Entrance requirements are a TOEFL (or equivalent) requirement of 500 or above, and completion of secondary school (high school). TEFL 20: Communicative Language Teaching, Part I Prerequisite: admission to the program This course will introduce teachers of children, adolescents, and adults to the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language communicatively. Participants will learn theory and apply it to real contexts. The following topics will be covered: teaching and learning styles; language acquisition; the teaching process; skills integration; teaching listening and speaking; teaching vocabulary, grammar and phonology communicatively, pair and group work. TEFL 30: Communicative Language Teaching II Prerequisite/Corequisite: TEFL 20 This course is a continuation of TEFL 20 for teachers of English as a Foreign Language to children, adolescents, and adults. Participants will learn theory and apply it to real contexts. The following topics will be covered: lesson planning; teaching reading and writing communicatively; cross-cultural communication; assessment and evaluation; classroom management and management issues; ongoing professional development.
