About Capella University It all started in 1992, when Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation, saw an opportunity to offer higher education in a convenient format to allow working adults to earn degrees without the boundaries and restrictions of traditional universities. He envisioned a high quality university that people could attend from remote locations, including their homes or wherever they might be traveling, at times that were convenient to them. Less than a year later, in 1993, Shank found a partner who shared his vision. Dr. Harold Abel, an experienced leader in higher education and former president of three universities, joined Shank to found The Graduate School of America. Originally, the university offered online master's and doctoral degrees in management, education, and human services.
In 1997, the university achieved accreditation from The Higher Learning Commission and became a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), a body that accredits many major public and private universities. Shortly after becoming accredited, the university changed its name to Capella University and established the five schools that exist today: education, business, human services, psychology, and technology.
Today, Capella University offers more than 650 courses and undergraduate and graduate degree programs in nearly 70 specialized areas of study. Capella's more than 10,000 learners include a diverse group of primarily working adults from all walks of life, including learners throughout the United States and around the world–learners who have experienced, firsthand, Stephen Shank's vision for a barrier-free, high-quality education. Courses at Capella University are much like familiar, classroom-based courses. Learning takes place through a blend of assigned readings, class discussion, faculty feedback, group projects, case studies, research and writing assignments. You can expect to invest a minimum of 10 hours each week in a course, two or more hours of which will be devoted to online course room discussions.
Capella's courses are asynchronous, which means you can participate at any time-24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from any Internet connection anywhere in the world. There are no required class times, although you are expected to visit the online courseroom at least four times a week. Asynchronous courses allow you to maximize your time spent learning, not going to and from a classroom.
In the United States the most widely recognized form of accreditation for degree-granting programs comes from the regional accreditation commissions. Capella University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools; 30 North LaSalle, Suite 2400; Chicago, IL 60602-2504; 312-263-0456.
