About Art Institute.

The Art Institute Online is a division of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, established in 1921.

Classes are asynchronous: Students login to their classes five out of seven days a week, without regard to their physical location or time of day. We can extend the benefit of our education in the creative and applied arts to adults whose full personal and professional lives, geographic location or physical abilities limit their ability to attend classes traditionally. All a student needs is access to the Internet and the specified computer hardware and software.
Classes are interactive: The process is not passive! Students engage not only with the lecture materials, assignments and readings, but also with each other, through focused, facilitated discussions.
Classes are learner-centered: Students develop their own capabilities and talents using many informational sources, including lectures, readings, life experience, projects and group discussions.

The facilitator aids the process by addressing student needs, interjecting their industry experience, and providing direction to create a unique learning experience for each student.
For more than 80 years, The Art Institute has tailored its programs to meet the demands of an ever-evolving job market. That's why we offer many technology-driven programs as well as a classic curriculum prepared with the help of program-specific advisory boards made up of industry professionals.

Created for busy people, The Art Institute Online is the first program that offers the convenience of learning the fundamentals of design via your computer and our easy-to-use virtual classroom software. Once you register for classes, you will be given access to the Virtual Campus.
The Virtual Campus is our building; it's just in cyberspace. In the Virtual Campus you can visit the Library or the Bookstore or attend your classes in the Virtual Classroom. You will also be given an email address and a Web space for your use to communicate with your fellow classmates.
You'll log on to read class assignments, submit your work, and discuss it with your instructor and classmates. On your time. When it's most convenient.
Courses are offered in a six-week intensive format that requires students to complete assignments and participate in online discussions five days per week. Students may complete their work at any time during a 24-hour period. Students are encouraged to take a maximum of two courses during each six-week session. There are two six-week sessions within each quarter.
All courses and programs are developed and approved by faculty, industry advisory boards, and governing boards. Faculty participate as subject-matter experts and work with instructional designers in developing these online courses.

To access all courses, you must have no less than a 56K connection to the Internet. In addition, you will need, at a minimum, a Pentium-class PC or a G4 or higher Macintosh computer.
You will need a Web browser to take any class and some courses will also require special software. For example, General Education courses may only require the use of basic word processing or office productivity software, while our program-specific courses may require the use of particular hardware and software for the completion of course assignments. Our online Course Catalog lists the specific software requirements for any course.
